Robert Francis Joyce was born in Oswestry, in the UK, in 1886 — one of two sons to a family of brewers. In 1908, at age 21, he immigrated to New Zealand.
In 1926 he established the Kaiapoi branch of a company called “Broadcast Reception Limited” which morphed by 1927 into “Joyce Radio Service” at 33 Fuller Street, Kaiapoi.
